Don't ever feel like your pet cannot join the outdoor fun and go on a boat with the family. If you do decide to take Spot on an aquatic adventure, be sure you know the proper safety for the animal. If a dog is new to a boat and the movement, make sure he feels comfortable and keep the trip shorter than usual. Once the dog gets comfortable, make sure all of the dogs needs are available. Of course animals are like humans, and we all need water; therefore, a lot of water needs to be available.
Sun can be everywhere when out on a boat, so shaded areas need to be available for the dog in order to stay away from problems that can be caused. Pads or protection for the dog's feet can be a great idea because of the hot sun that hits the surfaces. Dogs that are lean and muscular may have a hard time staying above water because of the buoyancy. Some dogs love the water and love to swim, but some dogs cannot swim. If your dog as very short hair and pink skin, bring along some canine safe sunscreen. They too can burnt by the sun badly.
If a dog is on a boat, a canine life jacket is an excellent idea, even if the dog can swim. There are life jackets that are made especially for dogs. Make sure the life jacket fits the animal properly, or it may not even help the dog in a life saving situation. Pick a life jacket that has handles to grab onto that way one can grab a hold of the dog if needed. Lastly, make sure it is a bright color that can be seen from a distance if needed and make sure that dog is comfortable in it. These come in all sizes and designs, just for your sailing companion's safety. You may have found your new right hand skipper after only one trip out on the water.
