Small Dog Adoption

Adopting a dog has a many benefits for all involved. Animal shelters keep about seven million dogs and cats each year. About half of these are put down. While this is better than abandoning a dog or cat to fend for itself, it does not compare to the benefits of adoption.

Small dog adoption is surprisingly easy. If you adopt a puppy, you have more opportunity to train the animal, and nip any bad habits in the bud. However, puppies are often chosen from animal shelters because of this, and because they are cuter than adult dogs. By adopting an adult dog you are taking an animal that is more likely to be euthanized.

Any habits that an adult dog has are likely to be relatively permanent. Although it's not entirely true that you can't teach an old dog new tricks, it is harder than forming puppy behavior. Most adult dogs have been house trained, so you will not have to go through the hassle of crate training a puppy.

Another advantage of adopting a fully grown dog is that any health problems will most likely have already become apparent. You'll know if your pet has any canine food allergies or any other health problems. Reputable animal shelters keep their animals' shots up to date, so if you get your pet there, it would be a while before you would have to worry about getting your dog vaccinations.

For a small dog, adoption can be a stressful experience, since small dogs are often more high strung. Although there are exceptions, large dogs are often more patient with children. However, if you go about it properly, adopting a dog can be a joyful time for everyone.
